Pop-up park
The Pop-Up Park is an evolving experiential activation I developed for Broward County Parks & Recreation to bring feeling of nature into everyday public spaces. What began as a small traveling installation expanded into a larger, collaborative experience for major events, combining environmental design, interactive elements, and visual storytelling to connect people with Broward County's parks.
The Challenge
How could we increase awareness of Broward County Parks and encourage people to reconnect with nature through engaging experiences outside the parks themselves?
Research
Inspired by research showing that spending time in nature with improved mental well-being, I developed the concept of prescribing time outdoors.
For the visual direction, I drew inspiration from the iconic I ♥ NY logo and playful, quirky graphic design. Bold typography, and vibrant colors helped shape an approachable identity that encouraged people to reconnect with nature.
This direction informed the I ♥ Broward Parks graphics, prescription-inspired postcards, and promotional materials.
Development
The Pop-Up Park began as a small installation I created using artificial flowers and a C-stand. It traveled between the Government Center, airport, and libraries.
I later expanded the concept for larger events. My original tunner design evolved into an open layour to accommodate wheelchair access. Working with Parks Planning & Design and Parks Maintenance, we translated the creative vision into a larger physical installation.
Reflection
Building the original Pop-Up Park myself gave me room to experiment directly with materials and space. Developing the larger version taught me how to carry that creative vision through collaboration. I learned how my role could expand from hands-on making to shaping an experience with a team's expertise.
