Modular garment
T-SHIRT REIMAGINED
A wearable experiment translating my collage practice into fashion. I transformed a basic black T-shirt into a modular garment that can be configured as a full top, bolero, tube top, skirt, or bag.
The Challenge
How could I transform a basic T-shirt into something edgy, functional, and adaptable while bringing my collage approach into wearable design?
Research
I explored bolero silhouettes and different removable hardware options as references for the garment’s structure and connections.
Connection to my practice: The daisy is a recurring motif in my collage work. In this garment, it becomes a functional pocket, bringing my visual language into textile design.
Development
I approached the garment through two perspectives: as a collage artist interested in taking existing materials apart and reconstructing them, and as a designer considering how those transformations could serve a practical purpose.
I separated the T-shirt into two main sections and used grommets and removable clips to create a connection system. This allowed the garment to function as a full top, bolero, tube top, skirt, or bag.
I also incorporated functional daisy-shaped pockets, bringing a recurring symbol from my artistic practice into the garment’s construction.
I wanted to create something edgy and functional. Grommets and clips were my first instinct: they gave the shirt an exposed hardware detail while allowing the sections to detach and reconnect. That combination became the basis for its five configurations.
Resolution
The result is a wearable experiment that combines my visual language with modular functionality. It can be configured as a full top, bolero, tube top, skirt, or bag.
Reflection
This project expanded my understanding of fabric and how I can incorporate collage techniques into textile and fashion design.
